One thing that amazes me is how often completely natural products have been used for hundreds and even thousands of years to speed up metabolism and fat loss.

The herb pausinystalia yohimbe is one such product, and this simple bark extract has gained popularity in the beauty and fitness industry for having thermogenic benefits.

So, a couple of months ago, I went on a bit of a research mission with my dietitian, and as a result, we found this supplement by MAN Sports. I spent hours checking its ingredients and I personally tested the product with a group of my clients.

Let’s dive into some details.

What Is Yohimbine?

Close up image of Yohimbine

Yohimbine is the principal active alkaloid extracted from the bark of the African tree Pausinystalia johimbe. Its historical use was not for nutrition or metabolism-boosting properties, but rather to aid with libido.

Yup, this could be one of the earliest forms of viagra, all from a completely natural product.

Different forms of this herbal extract have been available, and there was a time when it was an FDA-controlled substance only available with a prescription.

A study published in the National Library of Medicine has tested its effectiveness for erectile dysfunction, where positive effects were noted [1].

But MAN Sports did not look at bedroom activities as their primary reason for creating this supplement. Instead, the claim that is being made is in relation to its nutritional benefits in triggering thermogenesis.

My dietitian was able to point me to an interesting study where athletes’ performance levels were measured. There is a reasonable correlation, so,the stage was set for some personal trials.

Benefits of Yohimbine for Athletes

Body Builders working out on a gym

The area where studies have shown some good results after using Yohimbine is mainly around fat burning.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, it can slightly increase your body temperature due to its thermogenic effect, which requires extra energy [2].

With a balanced diet and plenty of exercise, that will translate into a reduction of fat storage.

I know a lot of bodybuilders who regularly stack this simple herb when they are going through a cutting phase to increase their muscle definition.

The increased fat-burning process will also release more energy. However, I would not consider this to be significant enough to justify relying on it as a pre-workout energy booster.

From a nutrition perspective, it also has no direct impact on muscle growth, which has been confirmed by studies.

Role in Mental Health and Cognitive Function

Yohimbe tree has been studied for its potential effects on various aspects of cognitive and psychological well-being. Here's a breakdown of the research and evidence in this area:

  • Anxiety and stress response: Yohimbine is known to increase physiological stress markers due to its action as an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist. This can lead to an increase in noradrenaline (norepinephrine) release, a neurotransmitter associated with arousal and alertness.
  • Cognitive enhancement: There is some evidence suggesting that Yohimbine may have nootropic effects, potentially improving cognitive functions such as memory and attention. This is thought to be due to its stimulatory effects on the central nervous system.
  • Mood effects: While some users report a mood-boosting effect, likely due to increased noradrenaline levels, others may experience increased anxiety or agitation. This variability in response could be due to individual differences in brain chemistry and psychological disposition.
  • Potential in treating psychological disorders: There has been some research into the use of Yohimbine in treating certain psychological conditions, such as phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, this application is still in the experimental stage and should be approached with caution.
Pros
  • It triggers thermogenesis and effectively burns fat
  • Increases energy and improves mood
  • It contains all natural ingredients
  • It doesn't contain artificial colors or flavors
Cons
  • It takes some time to see the results

Side Effects of Man Sports Yohimbine

Man experiencing a chest pain

Apart from 3 mg of Yohimbine, the nutrition supplement only contains gelatin and magnesium stearate, which make up the actual shape and structure of the pill to bind it all together.

For the majority of people, there will be little to no side effects from taking this product, but you should be aware that some reviewers mentioned stomach upset and increased blood pressure [3].

It’s something you should keep a close eye on if you’re new to this type of product.

If you have an underlying heart condition or you're elderly, consult a physician before you start taking it to ensure it won’t interfere with other medication you may be taking.

When Should You Take Yohimbine?

A man taking a supplement

Yohimbine should be taken in the morning like many fat burners to get the best benefits and kick start the thermogenic processes that will run throughout the day.

Some reviews pointed out good results when taking one capsule with breakfast and one with an afternoon snack.

This certainly does provide a nice even supply of the active ingredient.

In my experience, I take 2 capsules with food to avoid any stomach upset. This is especially the case in the morning when your stomach is empty after fasting.

And as with all nutrition supplements, aim to take regular breaks, so you don’t become desensitized.

Fat Burner Alternatives

We looked at how Man Sports Yohimbine compared to three leading fat burner supplements so you can make an informed decision.

PhenQ

PhenQ is a popular, all-natural, thermogenic fat burner that has become the go-to for many people looking to trim down.

My experience in the fitness industry has shown me that weight loss is not a one-size-fits-all, which is why I appreciate PhenQ’s multifaceted approach. PhenQ aims to reduce stored fat, block new production, and suppress appetite; PhenQ, unlike Man Sports, does so without yohimbine in its formula.

Not only did our test volunteers have increased energy levels, but they also saw decreased hunger cravings over several weeks of use.

According to our dietitian, PhenQ’s a-Lacys Reset® blend combined with caffeine, capsimax powder, nopal, and L-carnitine is a solid formula to achieve these results.

PhenQ is one of the pricier fat burners offered today and is more expensive than Man Sports Yohimbine; however, ordering directly from the official website will get you incentives like free shipping and bottles with minimum purchases.

Instant Knockout

Instant Knockout is a powerful fat burner that I have watched grow in popularity in my decade in the fitness industry. I have seen it help bodybuilders and athletes reach their performance goals.

It packs a punch with higher doses of thermogenic ingredients like caffeine, green tea extract, and cayenne pepper. Instant Knockout does not contain yohimbine for thermogenesis, as Man Sports Yohimbine does.

Our test group reported a noticeable decrease in appetite when reviewing Instant Knockout, and our dietitian gave credit to the hefty 1800 mg of glucomannan. I loved the huge energy kick from the caffeine to power through intense workouts.

Vintage Burn

Old School Labs, a company specializing in creating high-quality sports nutrition supplements, produces Vintage Burn, a popular fat burner supplement designed to help people lose weight and burn fat.

Vintage Burn contains a blend of natural ingredients believed to help boost metabolism, reduce appetite, and increase energy levels. Some key ingredients we highlighted in our review of Vintage Burn include green tea extract, raspberry ketones, garcinia cambogia, and caffeine.

Like Man Sports Yohimbine, Vintage Burn promises to boost thermogenesis to burn fat and improve mood, but does so with green tea extract instead of yohimbine; our test group volunteers noticed a moderate improvement in mood.

FAQs

Is Yohimbine a stimulant?

Yes, Yohimbine is a stimulant, but not in the same vein as caffeine. This means you have to be careful when stacking such a nutrition supplement with other stimulating products.

Is Yohimbine a diuretic?

No, Yohimbine is not a diuretic. In fact, there is some anecdotal evidence that it may have the opposite effect. As test results are still a little conflicting, it’s something to keep an eye on.

Is Yohimbine legal in the US?

Yes, Yohimbine is legal in the US, but there has been some confusion over the fact that the FDA removed it from a prescription list in the 90s. Despite this, no official legal action was taken to ban this herb.

Our Verdict on Man Sports Yohimbine HCl

After a careful review of scientific studies, my dietitian recommended that MAN Sports Yohimbine HCL is safe to use, and personally, I didn’t experience any negative effects.

I have used it a few times now during a cutting phase, and overall, my experience has been positive.

MAN Sports is one of the more trusted and reliable supplement makers out there, so you know you're getting a quality product.

I would recommend trying this supplement out if you want to burn some extra fat. This is a yes from me.
